The Legend of El Dorado

High in the Andes Mountains near Bogotá Colombia, Lago Guatavita is the location where the indigenous Muisca tribe would perform a ritual for each new Chief. He would be covered with gold dust and taken by the elders on a raft to the center of the lake on a raft laden with offerings of gold.

El Dorado ("the gilded one") would dive into the lake and the elders would throw the offerings in as well. After he emerged and returned to shore, a feast awaited him and he was received as the new Chief.
This exquisite piece, which depicts the ceremony - is on display at the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) in Bogotá. To see this and other priceless treasures, please go online to www.banrep.org/museo.

Our chef - Señor José García is also from the Colombian Andes and brings the culinary traditions of his people to you!
